Watch| Ever wanted to fight like a Jedi? You can learn to 'fight' with a lightsaber at Ludosport International Light Saber Combat Academy. It's based in Italy but has opened its first U.S. location in San Francisco, Calif.
Ludosport began in 2006 in Milan, Italy. Founders Simone Spreafico, Gianluca Longo, and Fabio Monticelli created the first LudoSport Academy, 'a place where the first pupils began to practice the original techniques designed to fit a “real” combat with a lightsaber.
Lightsaber combat could be termed as a 'martial art' but of course, the discipline and movements are a bit different. According to Ludosport, "the three Founder Masters of LudoSport had experience in different sports, martial arts, and fencing."
The model of lightsabers or 'sport sabers' used is the Polaris SSe-1, which features a soundboard, prewired plug & play module with a speaker and battery, 'WildLights' system to control brightness, an easy to recharge microUSB port and a TruceTime system that controls the sounds the lightsaber makes, just like the lightsabers in the Star Wars movies. Makes you wonder if Luke Skywalker had to charge his lightsaber.
Ludosport teaches three main values to connect students while sparring: Service, care, and respect.
"This sport is an activity that can be very high energy but at the same time it connects people, it connects friends."
—Daniele Maggi, Ludosport Instructor
The academy believes in creating an enjoyable yet challenging environment where students can progressively grow in the sport. The uniforms evoke a resemblance to what Jedi wore in the Star Wars Saga.
Marcus Luk, a student, is a huge fan of the Star Wars movies and says he found Ludosport on Facebook. While it's only been two months for Luk, he said he will continue so he can one day compete in Italy at an international competition.
