Legendary pop singer George Michael's death in December was due to natural causes, a British coroner announced Tuesday.

Michael suffered from heart failure, coroner Darren Salter said. Specifically, he had a dilated cardiomyopathy, which stretches a heart valve and makes it harder for the heart to pump blood, according to the American Heart Association.

Michael's death at his home in Oxfordshire was initially deemed "inconclusive." He was 53.

WATCH | Michael (born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou) rose to fame with the 1980s duo "Wham" with hit songs like "Last Christmas" and "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go". He later became an active LGBT rights campaigner after coming out as gay in 1998.

Salter said there would be no further investigation into Michael's death and asked that the media and public respect Michael's family's privacy.
