Barack Obama proposed to another woman before marrying Michelle, a new book claimsby Circa News

A new biography of former President Barack Obama has revealed that the former Illinois senator proposed to a serious girlfriend before meeting his eventual wife and former first lady Michelle Obama, CBS News reported.

The former girlfriend, Sheila Miyoshi Jager, is now a professor at Oberlin College in Ohio. In "Rising Star: The making of Barack Obama," she tells author David Garrow that Obama asked her to marry him in 1986. However, her parents put the breaks on the remove because they believed her to be too young.

Jager said that Obama's political ambitions began to interfere in their relationship.

"I remember very clearly when this transformation happened, and I remember very specifically that by 1987, about a year into our relationship, he already had his sights on becoming president," said Jager.

Jager also suggested that race was an issue, saying that Obama began to find her heritage, Dutch and Japanese, a political handicap as he was going to rise politically by embracing his black heritage.

Obama asked Jager to marry him before he moved to Harvard, but Jager says it was, "mostly, I think, out of a sense of desperation over our eventual parting and not in any real faith in our future."

In his first year at Harvard, he met Michelle Robinson while working for a local law firm. And we know what happened after that.

Some online accused Jager of seeking attention for fame.

Others criticized Obama for omitting Jager from his personal history due to politics.
