UPDATE 7:43 p.m. EST:
Following the appointment of Robert Mueller to serve as special counsel overseeing the Russian investigations, President Trump reaffirmed "what we already know," in a statement.
"...there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity. I look forward to this matter concluding quickly. In the meantime, I will never stop fighting for the people and the issues that matter most to the future of our country."
ORIGINAL STORY:The Department of Justice has appointed ex-FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel on Wednesday to oversee the FBI's investigation of Russian intervention in the 2016 presidential election and "related matters," CNN reported.
The move surfaces after some lawmakers have rallied the Trump administration in recent weeks to appoint an independent third party to oversee the investigations.
In March, Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the Russian inquiries following undisclosed contacts with the Russian ambassador to the United States.
