The U.S. Virgin Islands are celebrating their centennial in 2017. March 31st will mark the 100 year anniversary since the United States bought St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix from the Kingdom of Denmark. So, the Islands are running a special promotion for visitors who've booked a vacation this year.
Visitors who stay for at least three nights in a participating hotel will receive $300 in spending credits upon their arrival. These spending credits are essentially just like cash. But there are some stipulations.
You must book between now and October 1, with travel up to December 31, 2017.
"We invite people to come and commemorate this incredible date in our history. There's so much to see and do and with $300 in credits you have lot of cash to get it done."
—Beverly Nicholson Doty, Commissioner - Dept. of Tourism USVI
The U.S. owned Islands want people to come and adventure and culture all that they have to offer.
The $300 spending credits are good for hiking, kayaking, boating, adventure sports like zip-lining and just about anything cultural. That includes eco-tours, food tours, and museums. Visitors who want to go out and explore the cities can also use the money for car rentals, taxis, and scooter rentals.
The spending credits will be waiting for visitors upon their arrival at the hotel along with a long list of participating vendors, properties, and locations. Alcohol and dining establishments are excluded from the deal.
Food tours, however, are totally accepting of the spending credits and are a great way to try some Island cuisine. Local guides walk foodies to participating restaurant and bars and also sprinkle some USVI history in along the way.
Adrenaline junkies have plenty of activities to choose from. That's because the three islands offer some of the best thrill excursions on the planet. So, this shouldn't just be a 'lay-out and sip on a drink' type vacation.
Zip lining, diving, night kayaking, snorkeling and helicopter tours are just some of the cool adrenaline pumping activities you have at your disposal between St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. All three islands are within 30 minutes of one another (by ferry and sea plane).
The Zip line tour at Tree Limin Extreme in St. Thomas is a ton of fun.
The Adventure Center at the Marriott in Frenchman's Reef offers night kayaking with a twist. All their kayaks are retrofitted with powerful LED lights so the whole group glows in the water. The lights make it easier to see the tarpon, sting rays and sea turtles swim by.
The kayaks also have transparent bottoms. So all you have to do is look down.
So how do you get this $$$?
