The triple berry shortcake is a simple yellow butter cake filled with layers of whipped cream and three different kinds of berries. Decadent, light and just sweet enough - it's the most popular cake at the bakery and now a Los Angeles classic.
Chef and owner Jane Lockhart says she came up with the idea for the cake while pursuing fresh ingredients that her grandmother would have used.
Before Lockhart opened the bakery in May of 1988, she said it was difficult to find alternatives to the extremely sweet store-bought desserts. She wanted to offer something that tasted more homemade -- after all, her journey began in her own home kitchen.
Now, with three bakery locations, Sweet Lady Jane has a cult following that includes Hollywood elites.
"We've done cakes for Steven Spielberg and Kendall Jenner. Halle Berry comes in by herself to pick up her cakes," Lockhart said. "We did Jennifer Lopez's third wedding cake, we just had an order for Quentin Tarantino. So it's been fun."
Lockhart also had several encounters with Kobe Bryant, who came in to order his daughters' first birthday cake. He continued to order more cakes for more of his daughters' birthdays and even called from the road to order a cake for his wife.
"He called from San Antonio when he was in the finals. He says, 'I'm calling you from San Antonio.' I said, 'Don't you have a game to play?' But that's kind of the personal relationship that I've had with so many of these people."
Kerry Washington also celebrated her birthday with the triple berry cake.
But it's not just the triple berry cake that celebrities obsess over.
Sweet Lady Jane also caters weddings, private parties and events.
