Subway closed hundreds of locations in 2016by Circa News

Subway Restaurants closed hundreds of U.S. locations last year.

For the first time in the company's history, it closed more stores than it opened in 2016.

It still operates 26,744 stores in the country. That's down from the year before.

Subway is still expanding its international presence, though.

Worldwide, there are more than 40,000 Subways. That's more stores than any other restaurant chain, including McDonalds.

Last year, sales outside the U.S. rose 3.7 percent to $5.8 billion as it continued to open locations, according to Bloomberg.

"We are undertaking an exciting transformation that includes introducing new and improved products, creating an even greater customer experience, refining operations, and positioning Subway franchisees for continued success," the company said in a statement.

The sandwich chain has started experimenting with delivery services.

Subway is based in Milford, Connecticut. It was founded in 1965.
