South Korea gave Trump a history lesson after he said it was once part of Chinaby Circa News

During last week's interview with The Wall Street Journal, President Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping told him that "Korea actually used to be a part of China."

This infuriated South Koreans, becoming a talking point in the nation's presidential race and prompting officials to give Trump a history lesson.

Democratic Party of Korea candidate Moon Jae-in demanded full context from China.

"It's a clear fact acknowledged by the international community that, for thousands of years in history, Korea has never been part of China."

Chinese dynasties invaded the Korean peninsula multiple times over the nation's lengthy histories, but South Koreans insist they were never ruled by China, Bloomberg reports.

"This is clearly a distortion of history and an invasion of the Republic of Korea's sovereignty."

With the May 9 elections to replace disgraced former president Park Geun-hye looming, South Korean candidates weighed in on Trump's comments, uniformly condemning them.

Back in 2014, Trump said South Korea was "killing" the U.S. on trade deals.

He also hinted that they owed the U.S. for protection from North Korea.
