House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) extended an invitation to former FBI Director James Comey to testify next Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. EST, Politico reported.
Chaffetz confirmed that he has scheduled the hearing and is in the process of trying to secure Comey as a witness. The hearing will be the same day the FBI is expected to send documents to the oversight panel.
Comey has yet to accept the invite "but wants to testify publicly as soon as he can," one person who has spoken to Comey said. "They are trying to connect," this person said.
Chaffetz's request comes in the midst of fallout from President Trump's firing of the former FBI director. On Tuesday, Comey sent a memo detailing his communications with the White House and the Justice Department regarding the Russia investigations. The Senate Intelligence Committee has requested those memos and asked for Comey's testimony in an open and closed session.
